Forged career as an educator, art teacher in Newark, 100 Dorcia Amalee Saunders Berry departed this life peacefully, Monday, July 18, 2022, Capitol Hill, Washington, DC. She was 100 years old. Mrs. Berry spent her career as an educator and art teacher entirely in the city of Newark, New Jersey. She was one of the first three African American art teachers hired by the Newark Board of Education. She is survived by her daughter, Chantal Berry Dalton, and her husband, Jorge Garcez-Rocha, and five nieces. Mrs. Berry was predeceased by her parents, Aaron and Mary Saunders, her sister, Mary Louise Adams; a nephew, Aaron Terry, and her ex-husband, Adelbert Twitchell Berry. A "celebration of life" service in Washington will be scheduled in the fall. Mrs. Berry will be buried in New Jersey.
